Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication made from purified botulinum toxin. Extensive research and a long history of clinical use show that Botox is safe and effective for reducing or eliminating facial wrinkles.

What Kind of Facial Wrinkles are Treated with Botox?

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by years of repetitive muscle movements. Botox doesn’t treat static wrinkles: Wrinkles caused by sun damage, loss of collagen, and age-related changes.

Botox is especially effective for moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles such as:

  • Crow’s feet (on the sides of the eyes)
  • Frown lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines (on the top and sides of the nose)
  • Skin bands on your neck

How Does Botox Work?

Your doctor at Women’s Healthcare Physicians of Naples injects a small amount of Botox directly into the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. The toxin blocks nerve signals so the targeted muscles can’t contract and the wrinkle is significantly diminished or even eliminated.

Does Botox Affect Your Facial Expressions?

You don’t need to worry about your facial expressions after a Botox treatment. You won’t lose any feeling, and your face will still exhibit natural expressions.

Your doctor at Women’s Healthcare Physicians of Naples selects a few specific muscles underneath the wrinkles you want to have treated. It won’t affect most of your facial muscles.

What Happens During and After the Procedure?

Your doctor administers the injections using a very thin needle. Depending on how many wrinkles they're treating, the process should only take 15 minutes.

You may find the injection sites are a little red, slightly swollen, or bruised. This is only temporary, and you can apply makeup before leaving the office. You won’t need recovery time, but you’ll need to wait a few hours before exercising or engaging in any activity that raises your heart rate.

How Long Will Results Last?

You’ll see results in about 3-7 days after Botox treatment because it takes a little time for it to work. The results last 3-6 months, and then you can get another injection. You may find the results last longer as you get repeated injections.
